Review of and outlook for mergers and acquisitions in the European financial services market: 2005 This report analyses the deals and trends in the financial services sector across Europe in 2004 and provides insight into some of the factors that may shape European financial services M&A going forward.
Some of the key findings in our report include:
- 2004 saw deal values increase for the second year running with c. €45 billion of financial services deals announced in the year, an increase of c. €11 billion from 2003;
- 2004 saw an increase in the value of financial services deal activity across all sectors (banking, insurance, asset management and other) when compared to 2003;
- Cross border deals accounted for over 60% of all financial services M&A (measured by value) announced in 2004, although this increase was dominated by Santander’s acquisition of Abbey;
- 2004 saw an increased appetite from Private Equity investors;
