community* help. inspire. change.

Beyond cleaning up a community, rebuilding residences, refurbishing schools and playgrounds—beyond anything that takes place in a single day—these projects reinforce what it means to connect. To connect with each other, with our neighbors, and with the power of purpose. We come away with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration that we hope never leaves us. Here are a few stories about what we accomplished in June 2008. Perhaps you’ll be inspired as well.
Anne Mullane / New York
Building affordable housing for families in Guatemala was hard work. Children in the village made it easier. They learned our names and brought us fresh fruit. I learned that giving back is also about making meaningful connections. One person can give a child hope. Working together as a team, 31,000 people can motivate, educate and develop our next generation of leaders.
Carlos Navarro / Chicago
To encourage reading, we paired with students to build bookcases. They also took home several new books and a sense of accomplishment. Soon after, I got a thank you letter describing a passion for literature and better grades. One person can open a book. Working together as a team, 31,000 people can motivate, educate and develop our next generation of leaders.
Christopher Drula / Florham Park
It was heartbreaking to hear these kids say that college wasn't a reality. I challenged myself to change their outlook. When I teach basic finance skills they begin to recognize the tools they can leverage for success. One person can tutor a child. Working together as a team, 31,000 people can motivate, educate and develop our next generation of leaders.
Marc Ben-Ami / New York
As a “big” brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters, I try to share some of life's most important lessons with my “little” brother. It's been great to watch him grow, literally and figuratively. And I've grown too, learning what it means to have a positive impact in someone's life. One person can instill confidence. Working together as a team, 31,000 people can motivate, educate and develop our next generation of leaders.
