The Insights into Transformation - June 2008

Seven lessons learnt by top Australian CEOs and senior management executives on leading and executing major change programs

The Insights into Transformation study was undertaken between October 2007 and March 2008. It shares first hand insight from CEO’ and transformation leaders including Orica, Myer, Telstra, Department of Main Roads Queensland, National Foods and AGL Energy.

  • Lesson 1: Successful transformation requires agility and a shared understanding of the current and predicted drivers for change.
  • Lesson 2: Building and effective management team to lead change is important but so is the flexibility of the CEO’s personal leadership style.
  • Lesson 3: The customer should remain central at all points in the transformation process.
  • Lesson 4: Effective communication requires early and ongoing stakeholder planning and management.
  • Lesson 5: Making culture change stick is a core ingredient of successful transformations.
  • Lesson 6: Successful execution is impossible without early baselining of "as is" and development of clear metrics to achieve the transformation vision.
  • Lesson 7: Leaders must ensure business can continue as usual, which often requires more resources than planned.
